Serena Williams and Venus Williams were the main event for the US Open women’s doubles on Friday. The American duo suffered a dramatic end to their season when they were eliminated by the Czech duo of Klara Zakopalova and Lucie Safarova.
Zakopalova and Safarova won their match in five sets, 7-5, 6-3, 6-2, and their third-set match in three sets too.
If they had won their tiebreak, they would have been through to a second-round match against their countrywoman and partner, Dominika Cibulkova, who won their first-round match against top seed Sam Stosur.
The pair would have progressed if they had won a tiebreak against the Czech pair and, if they lost, through to a second-round showdown with Cibulkova.
Williams and Venus also lost to the top seed, Victoria Azarenka and her partner Sam Stosur, on Tuesday night.
The pair were beaten in a four-set thriller.
Williams and partner Serena Williams came up against a Czech pair in the second round of the women’s doubles at the US Open on Friday. Klara Zakopalova and Lucie Safarova defeated Venus Williams and partner Serena Williams with a 6-4, 6-0 win.
